Explore Handbook

Improving Access to Galleries for Disabled and Deaf People

Designed with the busy professional in mind, this is a collection of views, advice, checklists and resources for museums and galleries, offering support and expertise on becoming more accessible to disabled and deaf people as artists, visitors and staff.

The Explore Handbook draws on the learning that took place in 2007 and 2008 during Explore: Disabled and Deaf People Engaging with Galleries, with the aim of sharing and raising standards of good practice.

Access Consultant Michèle Taylor offers straightforward guidance on communicating with disabled and deaf people and on Disability Action Planning. Arts and Evaluation Consultant, François Matarasso, lays out the essential guide to holistic evaluation of arts projects with disabled and deaf people.

The book features top tips throughout, and a CD with a directory of contacts, case studies for inspiration and guidance notes to help galleries apply accessible approaches to all areas of their work. The CD also contains the handbook text in Word format, suitable for screen readers.
