engage 27: Exchange

Artists, Young People and Galleries

engage 27 asks what artists can offer to young people in projects brokered by visual arts organisations. We consider which artists choose this sort of work and how it relates to their practice, as well as what kind of mediation is required in different contexts – galleries, formal education and community and public realm settings.

Exchange is a double-sized issue of the engage journal, featuring contributions from artists, teachers and gallery professionals including: Sarah Cole, artist; Nanna Lüth, artist and educator at the Edith Russ Site for Media Art, Oldenburg, Germany; Sarah Mossop, Head of Learning and Partnerships at Modern Art Oxford; and Veronica Sekules, Head of Education and Research, Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts. It also includes an excerpt from a previously unpublished report, Artists’ Insights, originally commissioned by Arts Council England, and a new comic strip by the artist David Blandy about his collaborative projects with young people.

From Autumn 2011 the engage journal will be available exclusively online.
